Why do this minor?
This interdisciplinary minor offered through the Office of Civic Engagement is designed to build capacity in personal and organizational action to address public issues. Students in the minor build real world skills and knowledge for effective and ethical public service through study and applied practice. The minor is designed to complement a variety of majors and is intended for students seeking to address systemic social problems.

Required Courses
Area II, IV, and Minor Courses:
IDS 1101 – Citizenship to Address Global Challenges
Explore knowledge and skills of globally competent citizenship and public service to address global challenges faced in the 21st century with special emphasis on localized application.
IDS 2201 – Applications in Civic Engagement
Learn strategies and models for civic enrichment to address defined civic issues.
Minor Specific Courses:
IDS 3310 – Principled Public Service in Modern Age
Course explores ethical practices when individuals come together and address social problems in communities. Emphasis is on ethical leadership in the context of teamwork, participatory decision-making, and citizen empowerment.
IDS 3315 – Systems and Structures in Public Service
Covers basic principles of public management and administration- including history, development, organizational structures, and modern functions of public service organizations and advocacy efforts.
IDS 4410 – Social and Policy Entrepreneurship
Course explores sources of funding for social enterprises, such as philanthropy, governmental funding, grant writing, as well as income generating, self-sustaining arrangements that promote long-term change.
IDS 4495 – Capstone Internship
Internship based at a community agency, healthcare facility, school or government agency focused on addressing specific public issues and developing applied skills in public service.
