Assignment Details
Long Term Role
Hours vary depending on shifts and the activities.
Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
About the Assignment
We have locations across Greater Manchester which host a rolling Winter Night Shelter. Each place hosts 12 homeless guests once night per week and includes an evening meal, overnight stay and breakfasst.

The Night Shelter runs at the following times everyday for 6 months over winter:

Evening (17:30 - 22:00)
Overnight (21:30 – 6:30)
Morning (6:00 – 9:30)

Also, support is needed for preparing food, doing laundry, sorting donations and raising funds.
Application Process
All volunteers must complete application forms, which includes the details of two referees.

Volunteers can begin volunteering following the receipt of two satisfactory references and the completion of introductory training.
What to Expect
The project strongly believes in hospitality and equality, and aims to create a welcoming, homely atmosphere. Guests and volunteers sit down to eat together and join in conversations and activities.

Each venue has a selection of activities available to pass the time such as television, reading material and games, and tea, coffee and cold water is available for guests’ use throughout their stay.
What You’ll Be Doing
Volunteers at the shelter prepare the venue, welcome the guests, serve food and offer our guests conversation in a friendly environment. Volunteers are also needed to stay overnight.

Volunteers also come for a morning shift to help the guests prepare for their day with breakfast and pack away the space.

We also welcome volunteers who can:

-provide specific services at the shelters, for example teaching English or hairdressing;

-prepare food or do laundry for the project in their own homes;

-interpret for guests, or translate our documents into other languages (particularly Eastern European languages);

-collect donations from businesses and individuals; or
fundraise for the project.
