About the Assignment
GRADS (Group Recreation and Developmental Support) Groups serve school-age youth who are blind or visually impaired to promote the development of friendships and social skills, increase independence, and encourage participation in a variety of community activities. Groups meet one Saturday each month during the school year. During monthly meetings, participants experience a wide variety of community and recreational activities, discussion groups, arts, and much more.
What to Expect
Many participants require one-on-one support to participate in activities. Without volunteer support, we would not be able to provide this group program.

DGCkids is the only place where many of our participants get to engage with peers who face some of the same challenges or participate in this type of fun programming. As a DGCkids volunteer, you will feel proud knowing that you assisted participants in activities that otherwise he or she might not be able to do.

As a volunteer at DGCkids , you are also gaining skills and life experience that enhances your life. You will gain confidence and new skills while supporting and assisting participants with various disabilities, not just visual impairments. Although at times it can be challenging, there is nothing better than seeing the excitement and smiles on the faces of participants who completed an activity with the support of the volunteers!

Monthly activities range from:
Reading to CHAMP Therapy dogs
Going off-site to a local rock climbing facility
Simple cooking and meal preparation
Group discussions about age appropriate topics / school / peer pressure / how their visual impairment impacts their daily life
Walking to Mr. Wizards Ice Cream shop
Clinics on self defense, yoga, physical fitness, etc.
Guest speakers
Background check required for direct service with children

Suitable For
Volunteers with a variety of backgrounds and experience:
Recent retirees who are looking to stay active
College students exploring potential career paths, such occupational therapy, physical therapy and recreational therapy
Individuals who want to learn more about their community

Nice to Have
